The main thing is to know where this document is stored and how to obtain it officially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People come to us for various purposes. Someone is putting together a package for citizenship by descent. Someone needs to confirm their Jewish roots. And someone just wants to know who their great-grandfathers were. Below are three stories from our practice: Bessarabia, Odesa and Kharkiv region. We do not disclose the names and personal data of clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bessarabia: documents for Romanian citizenship<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-uagb-image uagb-block-d734a67f wp-block-uagb-image--layout-default wp-block-uagb-image--effect-static wp-block-uagb-image--align-none\"><figure class=\"wp-block-uagb-image__figure\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/familytree.in.ua\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/\u0411\u0435\u0441\u0441\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0431\u0456\u044f-\u0434\u043e\u043a\u0443\u043c\u0435\u043d\u0442\u0438-\u0434\u043b\u044f-\u0440\u0443\u043c\u0443\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u043e\u0433\u043e-\u0433\u0440\u043e\u043c\u0430\u0434\u044f\u043d\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"uag-image-1403\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" title=\"Bessarabia documents for Romanian citizenship\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"img\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Problem.<\/strong> The client was preparing documents for Romanian citizenship by descent. To do this, he had to prove that his family was connected to historical Bessarabia, a territory that was part of Romania from 1918 to 1940.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What were we looking for?.<\/strong> Two types of documents: an ancestor&#039;s birth record and official lists of residents of Bessarabia who received or confirmed Romanian citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key find was the file of the police department of the Chetatia-Albe (now Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi) county. The 1935 file contains 295 sheets of lists of residents of the county&#039;s villages who received Romanian citizenship. The difficulty was that the family history was torn between two eras with different registration systems: before the revolution, births and marriages were registered by religious communities, and after that, by the Soviet registry offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where did you find it?.<\/strong> The Odessa Rabbinate birth registry book for 1905 contains a volume of 979 pages. In the section &quot;On Births&quot; for May 1905, each entry contains the name of the child, the names of the father and mother, their status (bourgeois or merchant), and the city to which the family was assigned. The goal was to reconstruct the family tree, find unknown ancestors and relatives, and trace several lines as far back in time as surviving documents allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Search depth.<\/strong> The work covered three eras: the Soviet period, the Russian Empire, and the early history of the Kharkiv region. Among the sources found were records from 1732 and documents from the 17th century written in old cursive. Without experience in paleography, it is almost impossible to read such texts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What did you do:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>analyzed the initial information and drew up a step-by-step search plan;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>identified ancestral villages, their administrative affiliation, parishes, and archival funds;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>processed Soviet civil records;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>studied metric books and other genealogical sources of the Russian Empire;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>linked people between documents by name, patronymic, age, occupation, place of residence, and family ties;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>previously unknown branches of the family were found;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>restored marriages, births, deaths, connections between siblings and between generations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>dealt with different spellings and changes of surnames in documents;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compiled all the findings into a structured, documented family tree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-icon\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\">\n\t<path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M15.5 9.5a1 1 0 100-2 1 1 0 000 2zm0 1.5a2.5 2.5 0 100-5 2.5 2.5 0 000 5zm-2.25 6v-2a2.75 2.75 0 00-2.75-2.75h-4A2.75 2.75 0 003.75 15v2h1.5v-2c0-.69.56-1.25 1.25-1.25h4c.69 0 1.25.56 1.25 1.25v2h1.5zm7-2v2h-1.5v-2c0-.69-.56-1.25-1.25-1.25H15v-1.5h2.5A2.75 2.75 0 0120.25 15zM9.5 8.5a1 1 0 11-2 0 1 1 0 012 0zm1.5 0a2.5 2.5 0 11-5 0 2.5 2.5 0 015 0z\" \/>\n<\/svg>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The result: a family tree several centuries deep, with branches the family was previously unaware of.<\/strong> <br>The longest project is over 6 months. <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How we work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The regions and goals are different, but the approach is the same. Every search goes through the same stages:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Analysis.<\/strong> We collect everything the family knows: names, dates, places, traditions, household documents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Strategy.<\/strong> We determine which province, county, or parish the village belonged to in the desired year and where these funds are stored today. Borders and names have changed, so without this step the search is at random.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Search in funds.<\/strong> Metric books, confessional lists, audit tales, lists of subjects, Soviet civil records.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cross-check.<\/strong> We do not take any connection for granted: we check the name, patronymic, age, address, and relatives across several documents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Official registration.<\/strong> Archival certificates, certified extracts, translation, apostille - so that the documents are accepted by the state authorities of another country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Delivery.<\/strong> We send the finished package to the client in any country.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Where to start your search<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#039;t need a ready-made family tree to get started\u2014often just a few lines are enough. Sometimes we start with a single name and approximate place of birth, and end up with a tree that goes back several centuries. Before applying, gather everything you can find at home and learn from your relatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the ancestor&#039;s last name, first name and patronymic, at least the approximate years of life;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where he was born or lived: village, city, county or district;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>religion and nationality, if known;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>old documents, letters, photos with signatures on the back;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>memories of older relatives \u2014 even fragmentary ones;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>purpose: citizenship, proof of origin or lineage for oneself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-icon\"><svg aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewbox=\"0 0 24 24\">\n\t<path d=\"M6 5V18.5911L12 13.8473L18 18.5911V5H6Z\" \/>\n<\/svg>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Send us what you have.
